Education

The Cottonwood Creek Watershed Program is proud to offer public, private and home school students in grades kindergarten through eighth a very progressive science based educational program. Our program, entitled "Kids for Our Creek" gets students, teachers, and parents directly involved in the learning process. The program has an indoor, direct instruction facet and an indoor/outdoor, hands on facet.

For the indoor, direct instruction portion of our program, we will use a variety of nationally recognized curricula, such as Project Wild Aquatic, Project Learning Tree, and National Wildlife Federation's Access Nature. In addition, we will use curriculum of our own design, to touch on local watershed issues. This will ensure that students receive a pertinent and well rounded science based curriculum, as well as a deeper understanding of the ecological issues that affect their watershed. All lessons and units taught will be carefully aligned with the California State Science Standards, with many lessons being made applicable to Math, History/Social Science, and English Language Arts as well.

For the outdoor, hands on portion of our program we will give students, teachers and parents a variety of opportunities to directly apply the information they receive in the classroom to real world situations in the field. Various educational outings will be planned to sites throughout the watershed. These outings will allow students to apply the curriculum to real world situations in the field, showing them the application of their new knowledge. We will also plan and implement conservation and restoration projects throughout the watershed. Students, teachers, and parents will be directly involved in every aspect of the watershed conservation and restoration projects, from deciding which projects to undertake, to the gathering data, to the implementation of the conservation and restoration work. These conservation and restoration projects will conform to appropriate service learning standards. Throughout the process parents and teacher will be invited and encouraged to participate.

The Cottonwood Creek Watershed Group also currently provides adult education outreach through monthly stakeholder meetings at the Cottonwood Community Center (20595 Gas Point Road behind Holiday Market) all meetings are held at 6:15 PM. We also provide a quarterly newsletter to all residents in the watershed and other interested parties. The newsletter contains information on activities of CCWG, as well as on issues potentially affecting land management and other items of potential interest to landowners.
